10 Farm Books for Kindergarten

Preschool “At the Farm” Book List for Multilingual Learners

Why are these books good for ELL’s ?

When you have multilingual learners it makes sense to read stories that have clear pictures and are not too wordy. I have selected 10 books that are beneficial for multilingual preschoolers’ vocabulary expansion. I favor storybooks that have repetitive sentences and rhyming components so students are learning to listen and speak those sentences in a very natural way just by listening to the story. I also carefully select books that target different subjects like science, PSPE, math etc.

I always recommend rereading the stories in small groups or whole groups as the familiarity of the story will give the students confidence and trumps questions.

Little Blue Truck

Great way to introduce letter sounds. The animal and truck make sounds in this story and the text is rhythmic. It also teaches us to be kind and helpful.

On The Farm

Teach a child about animals on a farm. What I like about this book is that it repeats the preposition ON over and over.

Rosie’s Walk

This book has an important past tense word WENT. The pictures are clear and convey the story very clearly even if you don’t understand a word. This story is very suitable to play out in the Drama Center

Big Red Barn

This book is classic and so written so sweetly simple. The rhythmic text about the cycle of a day on a farm and the clear images and all the farm-related vocabulary make this book a must for your farm unit.

One Duck Stuck

This book is good for counting and counting words related to the Farm theme. I can read this every day and kids will enthusiastically listen and count, with so much joy!

Farming

This book is vocabulary rich. It has clear pictures of farming and the work done on a farm throughout the seasons. Perfect for practicing the present perfect tense so-called -ing endings in words.

Plant & Grow

This book is a lift-the-flap book that is something students love to do and at the same time they practice fine motor skills. This book is good for practicing and building sentence structure.

Biscuit’s Day at the Farm

This book is great because it has sight words and short sentences that are easy to read for multilingual students.

The Milk Makers

This book is great for science lessons about where milk comes from. Very clear pictures and simple sentences are perfect for multilingual learners.

Fun on the Farm

This pop-up book. Students can lift the flaps to find Hen, Pig, Sheep, and Horse before finding Little Calf. This book repeats the WH-word Who. Multilingual learners will have fun reading this story and learning what WHO means.
